artful と artless

前回 "Artful Dodger" という言葉を取り上げたついでに、artful と artless について書いてみたい。art からの連想で、前者を「芸術性にあふれた」と肯定的、後者を「芸術的でない」と否定的、というように類推すると、誤りになることがあるので注意が必要だ。むしろ逆に考えた方がいい場合がある。

辞書を見ると、artful には確かに「巧妙な」「上手な」という意味がある。英英辞典の説明では、

- performed with or showing art or skill
an artful performance on the violin

- skillful: done skillfully or with taste
an artful arrangement of blue and green ceramics

- exhibiting art or skill: The furniture is an artful blend of antiques and reproductions.

しかし、「人為的な」「技巧を弄する」「手練手管を用いる」「狡猾な」「ずるい」といった、文脈によっては褒め言葉とはいえない意味も書かれている。Artful Dodger もこちらであろう。そして、英英辞典の説明を見ると、こちらの方で使われることが多いように思われる。

- clever; having a lot of skill (usually in a bad sense)
an artful thief

- cunning: using clever, subtle, and sometimes dishonest means to achieve things

- slyly crafty or cunning; deceitful; tricky:
artful schemes

- intelligent and skillful, esp. in persuading, sometimes without being completely honest
His politics was an artful blend of high-minded patriotism and malicious gossip about his opponents.

次は、"Glenn Gould, Music and Mind" (Geoffrey Payzant) という本からの引用である。

In order to project the piece into large, crowded concert halls he had acquired stagy habits: expressive dynamicss and rubato, and other artful devices. These tricks turned up in the recording, which Gould says is a bad thing because they are not only redundant but distracting.

ピアニストについての話なので、この artful は演奏技術の巧みさについて述べたようにもみえるが、expressive dynamics とか rubato といった単語、またその後の内容などから、単純なうまさということではなく、ちょっと鼻につく技巧を示しているようにも受け取れる。

こうした用例を見ていると、artful をどう見るかは紙一重、どちらとも取れるようで面白い。そうすると Artful Dodger も、彼のスリの手腕を仲間うちで褒めているものなのかもしれない、と考え直した（私はディケンズの原作を読んだことがないので確かなことはわからない）。

一方の artless だが、こちらも確かに、「芸術性のない」「技術のない」「稚拙な」「不器用な」「へたな」という意味がある。

- inelegant: lacking skill, knowledge, or elegance

- poorly made; inartistic; clumsy; crude:
an artless translation

- lacking art, knowledge, or skill : uncultured
an artless brute

しかし、辞書にはこのほか、「自然のままの」「ありのままの」「作り物でない」「偽りのない」「飾らない」「素朴な」「純真な」「あどけない」「無邪気な」といった言葉も並んでいる。褒め言葉としても使えるわけで、伝統的日本人が好みそうな意味合いである。

- simple and natural; without cunning or deceit;
an artless manner; artless elegance

- free from guile or craft : sincerely simple
an artless young woman

- simple and honest; not wanting to deceive:
"Why did you take the money?" she asked the child. "Because I wanted it, " came the artless reply.

- not artificial; natural; simple; uncontrived:
artless beauty; artless charm; artless grace

次は、クリッピングしてあった英文記事からの実例である。これは褒め言葉と取って問題はないであろう。

They are mildly disposed, full of smiles, kind, self-sacrificial, abounding with love, brimming with joy, full of hope, plain-spoken and artless.
