筋金入りの dyed-in-the-wool

前回は「筋金入り」を表す card-carrying という表現について書いたが、ついでに頭に浮かんだのが dyed-in-the-wool という表現である。「会員証の持ち主」の前者に対して、こちらは「織る前に糸のまま染めると色落ちしない」ということらしく、「染まりきった」「生え抜きの」「根っからの」という意味になる。

英英辞典の説明である。

- (usually disapproving) having strong beliefs or opinions that are never going to change dyed-in-the-wool traditionalists
(origin) from the idea that wool which was dyed in its raw state gave a more even and lasting colour

- wholeheartedly and stubbornly attached to a set of beliefs, political party, or philosophy and totally convinced of its merits

- unchanging in a particular belief or opinion; inveterate
She's a dyed-in-the-wool conservative.

前回の card-carrying は自分について使った実例があったが、こちらは usually disapproving とあるので、そうしない方がよさそうである。

もうひとつ、deep-dyed という形容詞もある。

- 1. nonfading: describes fabric that has been dyed with a concentrated fade-resistant dye 2. Same as dyed-in-the-wool

- (informal) thoroughgoing; complete

なお、似た意味を持ち、やはり「色」や「染める」と関わりがある単語に true-blue がある。ついでだが、「色落ちしない」ことを表すのに fast という単語が使える。いずれも以前取り上げたことがある。
