sixth column

このところ、fourth estate、fifth estate、そして fifth column といった表現について書いてきたが、「では sixth column はないのだろうか？」という単純な疑問が頭に浮かんだ。手持ちの英和辞典を見たら、本当にこの表現が載っていた。

その辞書には「fifth column を助ける」とあったが、念のためオンラインの英英辞書を見ると、逆の関係にある２つの意味があげられていた。

1. the persons residing in a country at war who are devoted to aiding the fifth column in its activities, esp. by lowering morale, spreading rumors, etc.

2. the persons residing in a country at war who are devoted to blocking the efforts of the fifth column.

同じように相反するような意味を持つ単語として、以前、deceptively をあげたことがある。辞書によっては説明が不十分・不適切と思われ、注意すべきだといったことを書いた。

それに比べると、この sixth column の方は、載せていない辞書もあるくらいの語彙レベルだし、どちらの意味で使っているのか文脈からあたりもつけられそうで、それほどの問題はなさそうだ。

次はネットをあった実例で、ブッシュ政権とイラクの現政権を支持する団体が書いたものである。

ちなみに、fifth (sixth) column に関連する意味での seventh column という表現は、さすがに？見当たらなかった。
