「サイレン」ではない siren

この週末に聴いたドビュッシーの管弦楽曲「夜想曲」は３つの曲からなるが、終曲は「シレーヌ」と題されている。美しい歌声で船乗りを惑わして難破させてしまう水の精のことで、「セイレーン」とも呼ばれる。siren の由来でもあるが、ここから連想した表現 siren call について書いてみたい。

call の代わりに song や voices でもよいと辞書にある。まずはネットで拾った実例から。

siren を「サイレン」と取って、「警告」というようなことだろうか、などと類推すると意味を取り違えそうだ。神話の水の精とのつながりで考えるべきといえるだろう。

以下は辞書の説明と用例である。

- The siren call/song of something is its very strong attraction:
I responded to the siren call of the road and went for lots of long drives.

- the enticing appeal of something alluring but potentially dangerous:
He succumbed to the siren call of the wilderness.

- dangerous appeal: an alluring appeal, possessed by something or made by somebody, that has the power to tempt people, though yielding to the temptation may have unfortunate effects
She yielded to the siren song of a higher salary.

- the temptation to do sth that seems very attractive but that will he bad results
The government must resist the siren voices calling for tax cuts.

手持ちの英和辞典には「誘惑[欺瞞]の言葉、魅力(appeal)」などと書かれているが、用例がないので、これだけだと安っぽい小説やメロドラマに出てきそうな言葉と思い込みそうである。

ついでに Online Etymology Dictionary による siren の説明を転記しよう。

c.1366, "sea nymph who by her singing lures sailors to their destruction," from O.Fr. sereine, from L.L. Sirena, from L. Siren, from Gk. Seiren ["Odyssey," xii.39 ff.], perhaps lit. "binder," from seira "cord, rope." Meaning "device that makes a warning sound" (on an ambulance, etc.) first recorded 1879, in reference to steamboats. Fig. sense of "one who sings sweetly and charms" is recorded from 1590.

美しい歌声で誘惑するといえば、ライン川のローレライの伝説が頭に浮かぶ。辞書で Lorelei を調べると a siren of Germanic legend whose singing lures sailors to shipwreck と説明しているものがあり、これもセイレーンというわけである。こちらを使ったイディオムは、辞書を見る限り少なくとも英語にはないようだ。

さてドビュッシーは私の好きな作曲家で、以前、交響詩「海」という作品について、「神奈川沖浪裏」とからめて取り上げたことがあるが、今回聴いたCDにも「夜想曲」とともにこの作品が収められていた。梅雨明けはまだ先だが、この「海」や「シレーヌ」といった音楽を聴いていると、水の季節が待ち遠しくなる。

ごぶさたしております。以前ブログに、セイレーンがどんな歌を歌ったか私には推量できないと書いたのですが、ドビュッシーは推量できたのでしょうか。「シレーヌ」聴いてみたいです。

ぐうたらぅ さん、コメントありがとうございます。「シレーヌ」には無歌詞の女声合唱がついていて、これが船乗りを誘う声を表しているのだと思います。美しいメロディではありますが、ドビュッシーも具体的な歌詞で表現するのは避けたということでしょうか。
