gantry は、高速道路で頭上をまたぐように作られた標識などをつけるための構造物、あるいは、港などにある大型クレーン gantry crane の方が、日常生活にはなじみが深いだろう。英英辞典の定義である。

最後の scaffold は、建築現場の足場や、ビルの外壁で作業する吊りかご（ゴンドラ）、さらには処刑台という物騒な意味もある。

「足場」という意味では、scaffolding ともいう。先日亡くなったアーサー・Ｃ・クラーク Arthur C. Clark の「幼年期の終わり」 Childhood's End について以前書いたことがあるが、このSF小説の最初の方、打ち上げ前のロケットを描写する場面でこの単語が出てきて、私はこれで覚えた。
