「ゴールドフィンガー」と Midas touch

前回取り上げたゴルディオス王について読んでいたら、その養子はミダス王だとあった。the Midas touch は父親に由来する the Gordian knot よりも有名かもしれない。私はこの表現を、007の "Goldfinger" でシャーリー・バッシー Shirley Bassey が歌った主題曲で覚えた。



ミダス王は、触れたものが黄金になる能力を与えられたものの、かえって困ってしまったという。「ゴールドフィンガー」の歌詞では、 "He's the man with the Midas touch." と歌われている。なお英語の発音は /mai-/と二重母音なのは、シャーリー・バッシーの絶唱でもはっきりと聞き取れる。

このギリシャ神話のエピソードから、

という意味になった。

余談だが、「ゴールドフィンガー」に出てく悪役のフルネームは Auric Goldfinger である。auric は「金の」 of or relating to or containing or derived from gold ということなので、凄い名前をつけたものだ。本棚にある原作のペーパーバックをめくったら、次のようなくだりがあった。

"Who is this man, anyway? What's his name?"
"Goldfinger."
"First name?"
"Auric. That means golden, doesn't it?"

もっとよく探せば、映画の主題歌のように "the Midas touch" も原作の中に出てくるのかもしれない。これを読んだのはずいぶん前のことで、もちろん覚えていない。

さて、ミダスはまた、「王様の耳はロバの耳」に出てくる王様でもある ("King Midas has donkey's ears.")。

バッハの世俗カンタータ201番「フェブスとパンの争い」は、この「ロバの耳のされたミダス王」に基づくもので、こうした音楽作品にも使われているとは、西洋ではよく知られた神話のエピソードなのであろう。
