一敗地にまみれる bite the dust

前回書いた bite more than you can chew からさらなる連想で、bite the dust を取りあげよう。その昔、クイーンの名曲「地獄へ道づれ」 Another One Bites the Dust で覚えたが、印象づけられたのはそう前のことではない。たまたま相撲の２か国語中継をつけていたら、人気力士が敗れた時にアナウンサーが叫んだのが、この表現だった。

「日本人の英語」の著者マーク・ピーターセン教授は、別の著書の中で、英語のネイティブスピーカーはイディオムを単語の原義でとらえるわけではないといったことを書いているが（これは日本人と日本語についても同じだろう）、土俵に顔をうずめかねないように這いつくばった力士の様子に、なるほど bite the dust という感じだ、と思った。

ネットで検索すると、この表現を相撲に使った例が確かにヒットする。

- 1. to fail or to stop existing.

- To bite the dust is to die or to stop working:
