Plexiglas （アクリル樹脂）

前回取りあげた plastic から Plexiglas という単語を思い浮かべたので少し書いてみたい。固有名詞だが一般名詞としても使われていて、glass の影響か、最後の s を２つにする例もあるという。つまり plexiglass と綴られることもあるわけである。

手持ちの英和辞典では、「ジーニアス英和大辞典」の説明がわかりやすい。

オンラインの英英辞典から、わかりやいと思ったものを引用しよう。

- Trademark for a brand of tough, transparent plastic (polymethyl methacrylate) which can be used as a replacement for glass in windows, aircraft cockpit domes and windshields, and the like.

- Trademark. a brand name for a thermoplastic polymer of methyl methacrylate that is light in weight, resistant to weathering, capable of being bent when hot but returning to its original shape when reheated, used for signs

- A trademark used for a light, transparent, weather-resistant thermoplastic. This trademark also occurs in many instances lowercased and spelled plexiglass:

また Online Etymology Dictionary には、

1935, proprietary name (Rohm & Haas) for a substance also sold as Perspex and Lucite.

とあり、他にも２つの呼び名があることがわかる。イギリス系の辞書には US TRADEMARK FOR Perspex とあるので、英米で違うようだ。

ところで Plexiglas の由来を見ると from Greek plexis ‘percussion’とある。樹脂とのつながりが私にはちょっとピンとこない。

他の２つは、いずれもラテン語からつけられている。Perspex は perspicere (look through)、Lucite は luc- (light) から名づけたと辞書にあり、どちらも英単語との関連が想像しやすい。
