clean slate と「タブラ・ラサ」

前回、アルヴォ・ペルトという作曲家の名前に少し触れたが、その作品のひとつに「タブラ・ラサ」 Tabula Rasa がある。この題を初めて目にした時は「東洋的な語感だな」と勝手に考えたが、実はラテン語で、その意味は clean slate という言い回しを連想させるものだと後に知った。

- John Locke believed that all men were born with a "clean slate" (Tabula Rasa).

この例にある Locke とは経験主義の哲学者ジョン・ロックのことで、人間は白紙の状態で生まれてきて、観念を経験によって身に着けていくのであり、生まれたときから備わっているものではないという「タブラ・ラサ」論を唱えた（といっても読んだ説明の受け売りであって、理解しているわけではない）。

このラテン語を英語の辞書で見ると、clean slate あるいは scraped tablet と訳されている。

- an absence of preconceived ideas or predetermined goals; a clean slate
The team did not have complete freedom and a tabula rasa from which to work.

slate は a tablet used for writing on とか、a written or unwritten record (as of deeds) ということだが、clean slate について辞書は次のように説明されている。

- an opportunity to start over without prejudice

- a new start; especially to make a new start by clearing the record. This phrase comes from the use of chalk and slates in classrooms in the past.
By wiping the slate clean, a student could remove any evidence of a mistake

- a situation that shows that someone has behaved well or not made any mistakes

つまり、「これまでの出来事や過ちはもういいことにして、新たに出発を図る」、あるいは「悪いことはしたことがない」「後ろ暗いことはしていない」といった場合に使うようだ。以下は辞書やネットで見つけた例である。

- His boss assured him that the matter was finished and he could start with a clean slate.

- ...and it's loaded with top-notch engineers who have been given a clean slate to reinvent traditional approaches to ubiquitous worldwide communications

- No politician has a clean slate just like most police officers don't have a clean slate so forgive and forget or just forget.

先の例文にもあったが、wipe the slate clean とか clean the slate とすると、「過去を清算する」「新たに出直す」「水に流す」という意味になる。英英辞典では、

- to enable a person to make a fresh start in a job, relationship, etc by ignoring past mistakes, acts of crime, etc.

と説明されている。

- While public schools have no jurisdiction over children once they are transferred to a nonpublic school, the transfer does not "clean the slate" of past bad behavior.

- He wished he could wipe the slate clean, but it was too late to salvage the relationship.

- I believe Tony (Blair) genuinely expected that delivering victory in Baghdad would wipe the slate clean on the political controversy over whether the war was justified.

ついでに slate には、a list of candidates nominated by a political party to run for election to public offices という意味もあり、名簿に載っていることは on the slate となる。

- candidates on the left's slate on 74 per cent of constituency votes.
