carte blanche 「白紙委任状」

「白紙」の連想を続けるが、フランス語に由来する言い回しで、文字通り「白紙」なのが carte blanche である。「白紙委任状」「全権委任」「自由裁量」「すべては任せた、好きにしてよろしい」ということになる。

- freedom to act: permission or authority given to somebody to act with freedom or discretion
She's been given carte blanche to make whatever changes she thinks necessary.

- To be given “carte blanche” is to receive the power and authority to do as one wishes:
“The prime minister herself did not take any action on the refugee issue but gave her minister of the interior carte blanche to deal with the situation.”

- The term carte blanche is French for "blank paper" or "white card." The one using the blank sheet presumably has total control over what is written on it, hence the meaning of "total freedom" or "control."

「白紙」ではないが、さらに連想したのが rubber-stamp である。「ゴム印を押す」ということだが、ここから「深く考えずに形式的に承認する」ということになる。

- DISAPPROVING to approve (something) without giving it much thought
Congress is not going to simply rubber-stamp any policy the president proposes.

- (colloquial) to process, approve or decide matters routinely rather than through careful consideration They usually just rubber stamp orders under $100.

- noun (DISAPPROVING) an approval given without much thought:
You want the minority community to give this proposal its rubber stamp.

ところで、rubber-stamp にあたる日本語の表現「めくら判」は、差別用語ということで使われなくなっているようだ。英語の blind も、ネイティブスピーカーの中には visually-impaired などと言い換えるべきという人がいるようだが、一方で 「blind は問題ないし、visually-impaired とは意味あいも異なる」という考えを複数のネイティブから直接聞いたことがある。

また、はっきりと blind を言ってほしい、 visually-impaired などの言い換えはまやかしであり使ってほしくない、とする視覚障害者の英文も目にした。いわゆる PC (political correctness) の問題は、相手や状況にもよるもので、一律に決められるとはいえない難しい面もあるのではないか、と門外漢なりに考えた次第である。
