ケネディ議員の民主党大会演説

アメリカの民主党大会で、脳腫瘍を患うケネディ上院議員が演説していた。こうした場に姿を見せるのは最後では、という空気が会場にはあっただろうし、凶弾に斃れた兄の、そして自身が行った過去の演説を思わせる表現を使っていたのが、より印象を深めたように感じられた。



登壇したケネディ議員は、病気には直接触れなかったものの、それをおしての出席であることをまず印象づけた。

- Nothing -- nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight.

- I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate when we begin the great test.

オバマ氏を応援したくだりでは、今回の選挙戦でおなじみになったキャッチフレーズを使っていた。

...We can meet these challenges with Barack Obama. Yes, we can, and finally, yes, we will.

そして、

We are told that Barack Obama believes too much in an America of high principle and bold endeavor, but when John Kennedy called of going to the moon, he didn't say it's too far to get there.

と、実兄のジョン・Ｆ・ケネディ大統領を引き合いにする。オバマ氏が、一部で「ケネディの再来」といわれていることも意識させる。

そして演説の大詰め、

And this November the torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans, so with Barack Obama and for you and for me, our country will be committed to his cause.

というくだりは、どう見てもジョン・Ｆ・ケネディ大統領の就任演説に出てくる、有名な "The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans." を想起させる。

当時、旧世代からたいまつを受け継いだケネディ兄弟の世代は、いまやオバマ氏に代表される世代にたいまつを受け渡す側になったというわけであろうか。

続く演説の最後の部分、

The work begins anew. The hope rises again. And the dream lives on.

は、エドワード・ケネディ議員自身が1980年の民主党大会で行った演説の締め、"The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dreams shall never die." を思い出させるものだ。

私はアメリカについて専門に学んだわけではないが、英語学習ではどうしてもアメリカに関係ある内容が多かったことから、当時、この演説が当時大きな反響を引き起こしたことを覚えている。

この年、ケネディは現職のカーターと大統領の民主党候補指名をめぐって争い、敗れた。敗北を受けて行ったのがこの演説である。当時は衛星放送もインターネットもなかったので実際の演説に触れたわけではないが、勝者のカーターも霞んでしまったというようなニュース記事を読んだ。今でも、エドワード・ケネディによる演説の中で、この締めの言い回しとともに、最も知られているものだと思う。

さて、今回のケネディ演説から上記のような連想をしたのは私だけではないことを、演説の翌日、ネットの記事を読んで知った。

エドワードはケネディ兄弟の末弟として、早くから将来の大統領候補と目されていた。ジェフリー・アーチャー Jeffrey Archer はその作品「大統領に知らせますか？」 Shall We Tell the President? (1978) で、彼を大統領として登場させた（のちの改作では、初の女性大統領に変更されている）。

しかし現実は小説のようにはならかった。強い存在感を示したのは、皮肉なことに候補者指名争いに敗れた時だった。

病と闘いながらの今回の演説もそうした機会として数えられるようになるのだろうか。去り際にひときわ輝く彼の姿は、Camelot　（ケネディ「王朝」の時代）がまさに歴史の一部になろうとしていることを象徴しているかのようである。
