name-dropping

このところ celebrity について書いてきたが、そういえば「有名人の名を知り合いであるかのようにやたらと口にする」という意味の単語があったはず、ということに気づいた。しかし思い出せず、昔の学習ノートを繰ってたどり着いたのが namedropping (name-dropping) である。

英英辞典の定義は次のようになっているが、なぜ name-dropping というようになったのかまではわからなかった。やはり否定的な意味合いで使われるようである。

- the practice of frequently mentioning the names of famous or influential people as friends or acquaintances in order to impress people

- the introduction into one's conversation, letters, etc., of the names of famous or important people as alleged friends or associates in order to impress others.

また、こういう人は namedropper (name-dropper) と呼ぶ。

ネットには、こんな例があった。Harry Wismer という、すでに物故したスポーツキャスターについての Wikipedia の記述である。

Wismer became known for an enormous ego and developed a reputation as a "namedropper", preferring to announce the names of celebrities of his acquaintance who were in the audience to the actual game action, and was alleged at times to include them in the crowd of games which he announced when they were in fact elsewhere.

といった言い方もできるようだ。自分にはその傾向があるかな、と思われたら使ってみてはいかがだろうか。

関係ないことだがついでに書くと、dropping は鳥や獣の「ふん」を指す場合に使われる。
