オバマと小浜と namesake

前回取り上げた name-dropping から name つながりで頭に浮かんだ単語が namesake である。「同じ名前の人・物」、「ある人にちなんで名づけられた人」を意味する。

A person, place or thing having the same name as another.

最近の話題にからめていえば、アメリカ大統領選挙の「オバマ」候補と福井県の「小浜」市の関係がこの単語で表現されている。

余談だが、ジュンパ・ラヒリ Jhumpa Lahiri というインド系アメリカ人作家が書いた「その名にちなんで」という小説がある。アメリカに移住したインド人を描いた興味深い作品だが、原題は "The Namesake" である。読んだのは翻訳だが、以前「印象に残った翻訳」として取りあげた「さゆり」と同じ翻訳者によるもので、やはり達意の訳文であると思った。
