You can talk. と You can't talk. は同じ意味

先日 Now you're talking. を取り上げたついでに、句動詞ではない talk がらみの表現をさらにあげてみたい。まずは Look who's talking. である。「よく言うよ」「君だって大きなことは言えまい」ということで、英英辞典では次のように説明されている。

- (informal) used to tell somebody that they should not criticize somebody else for something because they do the same things too:
'George is so careless with money.' 'Look who's talking!'

これと同じ意味を持つのが You can talk. という表現である。「あんた、話せるね」という意味になるのだったら日本語と同じで面白いのだが、やはりそう都合よくはいかない。

面白いのは、You can't talk. としても、You can talk. と同じだということだ。そんなバカな、と思う人もいるかもしれないが、他にも I could care less. と I couldn't care less. が同じ意味だという類例（？）がある。言葉とはことほど左様にいいかげん、あるいは柔軟性に富むもので、論理だけでは割り切れないということを実感する。

なおアメリカ英語では can (can't) の代わりに should (shouldn't) ともいうと辞書にある。

- 'He's a terrible driver.' 'You can talk!'
'And you're telling me I'm lazy? You should talk!'

もうひとつ、Talk about... は「何という...だ」「これぞまさに...だ」という意味になる。辞書の説明と例文を書き留めておく。

- (informal) used to emphasize that something is an extreme or striking example of a particular situation, state, or experience
Talk about hangovers! But aching head or not we were getting ready.
- Talk about luck! I passed the examination.
- He spent all his money on a new car. Talk about wasting
money.
