オバマ氏のからみで続ける。The Economist 誌に "Signed, sealed, delivered" という題名の記事があった。これはイディオムだが、何となく引っかかるので調べたら、スティーヴィー・ワンダーに同名の曲があり、オバマ氏の選挙運動で使われていた。知っている人にはピンと来る仕掛け、ということであろう。

まずはイディオムの signed, sealed, and delivered について、辞書の定義を見てみよう。

Stevie Wonder の曲だが、正確には "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" で、1970年の作品。これを収めたアルバムのタイトルは、イディオムと同じ "Signed, sealed, and delivered" である。私がスティーヴィー・ワンダーを聞くようになったのは1980年代以降、しかも大ファンというわけではないので、こうした初期の作品についてはよく知らない。

上記 Wikipedia には、"Political Significance" として、オバマ氏の選挙運動との関連についても言及があった。ちょっと長いが引用したい。

さらにじっくりと調べれば、いろいろ面白い関連記事が見つかることだろうが、残念ながらその余裕がない。

仕事が忙しい時期と重なったことがあり、私は今回のアメリカ大統領選挙を熱心には追っていなかった。今回の内容も、すでにご存じの方にとっては何を今さら、であろう。こうした背景知識を知らなくても仕事や生活に支障があるわけではないが、私としてはちょっと悔しい気持ちである。

ところで冒頭の「エコノミスト」誌の記事は、オバマ氏の勝利を冷静に分析したもので、最後のパラグラフでは

- But for all the historical significance of Mr Obama’s victory it would be a mistake to over-interpret it: excited talk among liberals of the dawn of a new age of liberal activism is premature.

と書いている。この記述と直接の関係はないが、オバマ氏当選に対する日本国内の反応にも、ちょっとはしゃぎすぎではないかと思うものがあった。

初のアフリカ系大統領の選出は歴史的な出来事だし、彼の巧みな弁舌は聞く者を魅了するのは確かだ。しかし、だからといって彼を有能な政治家や人格者のようにとらえるのは行き過ぎではないか。そうした早すぎる評価が一部に見られるような気がする。

その一方で、「たかが一国の大統領選挙、何で大きく取り上げる必要があるのか」といった醒めた見方に与するものでもない。好むと好まざるとにかかわらず、アメリカの政治や経済状況が、日本をはじめ他国に大きな影響を与えるのは否めないからだ。こちらの態度に関係なく、向こうから否応なくやってくる点では、日本の国内政治と同じである。やはり、この国と新政権の動向には注意を払わなくてはいけないな、と思っている。
