straight and narrow と「狭き門」

前回取り上げた straight arrow と似た響きを持つ表現に straight and narrow があるので、短く触れておきたい。意味もちょっと似たところがある。

- The way of proper conduct and moral integrity. Often used with the: kept strictly to the straight and narrow.

(idiomatic) honest; proceeding according to rules and plans

意味から見て straight が使われているのはなるほど当然だと思う。しかし、それは実は早合点かもしれないようだ。由来を見ると、もともとは strait (= narrow) だという見方があり、その表現が出てくるのは新約聖書のマタイ伝、かの「狭き門」のくだりなのだそうだ。

Etymology: probably alteration of strait and narrow; from the admonition of Matthew 7:14 (Authorized Version), “strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life”

有名な「狭き門より入れ」の部分を、日本語の文語訳とともに引用してみよう。

- 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

この部分、現代英語では次の版のように strait の代わりに narrow が使われている。わかりやすいものの、straight and narrow と関連があるかもしれない、ということは伝わらなくなる。

13 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

strait といえば、「海峡」を思い浮かべる人も多いと思うが、これは「狭い（場所）」ということから来ているのであろう。
