「2008年英単語大賞」は bailout

"Word of the Year" の発表は毎年この時期の楽しみである。The American Dialect Society が前年を象徴する言葉を選ぶものだが、今回は金融危機を反映して bailout が最も票を集めた。確かにこの単語は去年後半いやというほど目にしたので、選ばれたのは順当というべきか、残念というべきか。

１位にはならなかったが、候補にあがったものはアメリカ大統領選挙関連の単語・表現が目立った。Obama を使った種々の造語や change、hockey mom、さらに私も以前取り上げたことがある lipstick on a pig もあった。初のアフリカ系候補や共和党の女性副大統領候補が集めた注目度の高さや話題性を考えれば当然かもしれないが、こうした単語が並ぶのは十分予想されたことだけに、私としては面白さは今ひとつだ。賞味期限は今回限り、というものもかなりあると思う。

大統領選挙関連以外で、説明を読んでちょっと面白いと思った単語を列挙しよう。

- text(ing), in driving while texting (DWT), the sending of text messages while conducting and[sic] automobile, and textwalker, a person who texts while walking.

- moofing: From "mobile out of office," meaning working on the go with a laptop and cell phone. Created by a PR firm.

- baby mama: From a man's point of view, a woman to whom he is not married and who is the mother of his child.

この他、例によってアメリカの動きを知らないとよくわからないものがいくつもあったが、ここら辺はいたしかたない。

なお、アメリカの辞書出版社の雄 Merriam-Webster 社も Word of the Year を毎年選定しており、結果はすでに発表されているが、こちらも１位はやはり bailout だった。２位は私も取り上げたことがある vet であった。

「text(ing)」の英文は conducting an automobile ですかね。でも、元の The American Dialect Society のページにも conducting and automobile と書いてありますね。うーむ。
