$64 question

前回 question にからむ言い回しを取り上げたついでに、「数にちなんだ表現」として the sixty-four-dollar questions が頭に浮かんだので、ちょっと書いてみたい。

オンラインの辞書には、例えば、

the critical or basic question or problem:
Whether the measure will get through Congress this session or not is the sixty-four-dollar question.
Also, $64 question.
Origin: from the fact that 64 dollars was the largest prize on a popular radio quiz show in the 1940s

という説明が載っている。

Wikipedia は信頼度の問題はあるが、英語の表現も見出し項目にしていることが多くて重宝する。しかし今回の表現は載っていなかった。そんなこともあるのだな、と思っていたら、"The $64,000 Question" という項目があるのを見つけた。

The $64,000 Question was a popular United States television game show from 1955 to 1958.

と始まるこの項目は英語表現についてではないが、読んでみると、どうやらこれが今回の表現の由来となった「1940年代の人気クイズ番組」であるようだ。最初は "Take It or Leave It" という題名で1940年に始まり、のちに "The $64 Question" になった。

そして、

During the 1940s, "That's the $64 question" became a common catch phrase for a particularly difficult question or problem.

という説明がされていた。そして面白いことに、

Strangely, the phrase "the $64,000 question" is common in Britain, where it means "the most important question," despite the fact that the original game show is virtually unknown in the UK.

という記述がある。続く説明はちょっとややこしいので、興味のある方は Wikipedia の原文を読んでいただきたい。1955年には、媒体をラジオからテレビに移して、見出し項目になっている "The $64,000 Question" という番組が始まった。

先日も紹介した辞書 Oxford Dictionary of Catchphrases を本棚から取り出して見たら、やはり "The sixty-four thousand dollar question" が見出しになっていて、

The 1950s television version upped the ante a thousandfold, giving rise to the catchphrase 'the sixty-four thousand dollar question'.

とあった。

この「64,000ドル」の方を辞書で見ると、 the million-dollar question という表現と並べて、例えば

最も重要で（解決の）難しい問題（賞金の最高額が6,400ドルだったラジオのクイズ番組から）

ただし先にあったように、この額はテレビになってからなので、この由来は厳密には間違いというべきであろう。
またオンラインの Cambridge International Dictionary of Idioms は

an important or difficult question which people do not know the answer to
So will she marry him or not? - that's the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question.

さらに Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary には "$64,000 question" の形で見出しがあり、

noun [C usually singular] (ALSO million dollar question) an important or difficult question, on which a lot depends:
The $64, 000 dollar question is, can we repeat last year's success?

としていた。

今回取り上げた表現が実際に使われた例を私は見聞きしたことはなく、現在どれくらい使われているのかはわからない。それでも、たまたま覚えた表現の由来をたどったら、聞いたことも見たこともない（たぶん本国アメリカでも直接知っている人は少なくなっているであろう）クイズ番組にたどりついたのは何とも面白いことであった。
