hype and hyperbole

このところ取り上げてきた hyperbole と hype, overhype は、意味や綴りが似ていることから、直接のつながりがあるのではないかと思えてくる。

手持ちの辞書を見た限りでは詳しいことはわからなかったが、あるサイトの hyperbole の項に、次のような記述があった。

Tips: A hyperbole denotes a clear and intended exaggeration. Note the word hype in hyperbole. Hype refers to greatly exaggerated publicity. Hyperbole is used more to denote statements that are gross exaggeration used to deceive people. Politicians often use hyperbole and accuse other politicians of using hyperbole (exaggerated statements).

さらにネットを見ると、２つの単語を続けた hype and hyperbole あるいは hyperbole and hype の形で使われた例がいくつかあった。

ならばもう一声、overhype and hyperbole や hyperbole and overhype もあるのでは、と考えてネットを検索してみると、確かにヒットがあった。とはいえ、それほど数が多いわけではない。

こうした表現が、似た言葉をつなげただけなのか、あるいはまとまった言い回しとして使われているのかについてはよくわからない。
