「窓」ではない window

北朝鮮のミサイル発射を伝える英文記事について続ける。今回北朝鮮は、「人工衛星」を４月４日から８日までの期間、それぞれ午前１１時から午後４時までの間に打ち上げる、と関係機関に事前通告していた。

平和利用とのポーズを示すためと受け取られていたが、それはともかく、この予定期間を伝えるのに window という単語を使っていた記事があった。単純な「窓」以外に window が使われる実例ともいえるので、覚えておきたい。

- North Korea has said the launch will happen between 4-8 April, during windows from 0200 to 0700 GMT.

- Pyongyang last month said it would launch an "experimental communications satellite" for "peaceful purposes," announced an April 4-8 window for the liftoff, and provided safety information to international shipping and air organizations.

- North Korea has decided to hold back on launching a long-range rocket, on the first day of an announced five-day launch window. Weather was a likely factor.

- North Korea has not yet launched a controversial three-stage rocket. Saturday was the first day in the five-day window that North Korea designated for the launch of its rocket, which it says is intended to put a satellite in orbit.

こうした window を、上空に打ち上げるために開く「窓」というように比喩的に考えても意味は取れるが、辞書には次のように書かれている。英語による説明を読むと、「その間に何かができる（何かをしなくてはならない）」というニュアンスをおさえておく必要があるように思う。

launch window を見出し語に立てている辞書もあり、次のような説明がついていた。当然のことながら、人類の宇宙進出が始まった時代に出てきた言葉であった。

a precise time period during which a spacecraft can be launched from a particular site in order to achieve a desired mission, as a rendezvous with another spacecraft. Also called window.

ついでだが、「窓」以外の window としては、「敵のレーダーを攪乱して探知されにくくする金属片」という意味があり、chaff とも呼ばれる。

もうひとつついでに、window dressing は「ショーウィンドウの飾りつけ」の他、「体裁を繕うこと」、「まやかし、ごまかし」、また「粉飾、粉飾決算」という意味もあり、ニュース記事で目にする。

コンピュータの分野でも、たとえば、バックアップのできる時間を backup window とか、期間の意味でときどき使われます。カタカナ語でも「バックアップ ウィンドウ」というようです。工夫のない訳語ですね（笑）。
それにしても、期間を「窓」に例えるというのは日本語にはない連想ですよね。日本語で期間の比喩に使われているのは「尺」ぐらいでしょうかね。

たんご屋さん、面白い情報ありがとうございます。こんな言い方をするのですね。こうした例を見ると、「窓」をどうとらえるかが、英語圏と日本の文化ではずいぶんと違っているように思えますね。
