chad の複数形は何か [英語のトリビア]

chad をめぐってさらに続ける。Wikipedia の記事を読んでいたら、次のように "Chad were..." という文があるのに気づいた。このオンライン事典は一般の人が執筆できるのが特徴だが、そのせいか間違いも見かける。今回は内容についての疑念ではないが、単純な -s のつけ忘れ、あるいは was の誤りなのだろうか。

Chad were made infamous in the highly contentious 2000 United States presidential election where many of Florida votes used Votomatic punch card ballots.

前々回あげたサイトのひとつを見ると、次のような記述があった。

One last thing to note is that the plural of chad is chad, not "chads."

つまり単複同形というわけで、Wikipedia の顔も立つというものだ。

しかし、同じ Wikipedia の関連項目を見ると、ここでは chads が使われていた。

Chadless Tape
Most tape-punching equipment used solid punches to create holes in the tape. This process inevitably creates "chads", or small circular pieces of paper. Managing the disposal of chads was an annoying and complex problem, as the tiny paper pieces had a distressing tendency to escape and interfere with the other electromechanical parts of the teleprinter equipment.

マスメディア、さらには言葉についてのサイトでも -s をつけた形を目にする。

- Amid the tight race for votes in the sunshine state, fierce arguments ensued about whether to count ballots whose chads had managed to cling on by one or more of the cardboard slivers connecting it to the card.

- How should Florida count its presidential ballots? If officials in the Sunshine State follow the trend in other states, they'll count those "hanging chads" or even "bulging chads" as votes.

- Hanging chads, swinging chads, pregnant, dimpled, rumpled, stunted, furtive, fugitive and flying chads! "Chads," of course, are the tiny bits of confetti-like material that are punched (or not) out of the punch-cards used as ballots in many polling places (including mine) in the US.

こうしたサイトもお馬鹿な間違いをしていることだろうか。そこで chad についての説明をあらためて読むと、「マクミラン」のサイトに次のような指摘があった。

Opinion has also varied on chad’s countability. Originally, it was thought of as a mass noun, with phrases such as a piece of chad being used to refer to one of the little bits of paper. With popular use however, chad has become countable, with an identical plural form chad (by analogy with nouns such as sheep, where the singular and plural forms are the same). More recently, a plural form chads has also begun to emerge.

Chuck

Long time no see, 子守男-san. Thank you for this interesting and informative entry. It seems to me that much the same can be said about e-mail/email, which seems to be treated as both countable and uncountable although mail in the sense of letters and parcels sent by post is a mass noun except that chiefly in North America they seem to say the mails were lost in transit. English is really a crazy language, isn't it? That would make it all the more interesting. Your blog is the only one I have so far found worth reading.
