hackneyed

前回取り上げた hack からの単純な連想で hackneyed という単語について短く書いておきたい。言葉・表現などが「使い古された」「陳腐な」という意味である。

「陳腐な言葉、常套文句」といえば cliché という単語が頭に浮かぶが、hackneyed phrase などを使ってみるのもいいかもしれない。

しかし hackneyed がどうしてこんな意味になるのか。-ed を取った hackney と関係がありそうだ。この単語を辞書で見ると「乗用馬」「馬車用の馬」という意味が出ているが、Compact Oxford English Dictionary の hackneyed には

ORIGIN from the obsolete verb hackney use a horse for general purposes, later make commonplace by overuse.

とあり、馬を使役することから「使い古す」といった意味が持たれるようになったらしいことがうかがえる。

さらに電子辞書の Oxford Dictionary of English を見たら、

probably from Hackney in East London, where horses were pastured. The term originally denoted an ordinary riding horse (as opposed to a war horse or draught horse), especially one available for hire: hence hackney carriage or coach, and the verb hackney meaning 'use (a horse) for general purpose', later 'make commonplace by overuse' (see hackneyed)

という記述があった。ハックニーという地名に由来する可能性があるということで、面白い。

そして、この単語を短くして hack として使われることも辞書に載っている。であれば、前回取り上げた単語と実は関係があるのでは、と思いたくなるが、辞書を見ると、綴りが同じだけで由来は全く別の単語で、前回の hack は "Old English haccian 'cut in pieces', of West Germanic origin" (Oxford Dictionary of English) ということだそうである。
