守護天使 (guardian angel)

前回取り上げた tooth fairy から、直接の関係はないが guardian angel を連想したので短く書いておきたい。かつて何かで、「守護天使」という、当時としては見慣れない言葉を読み、そこから逆にこの英語を知ったのだったと記憶している。

手持ちの英和辞典では、「アンカーコズミカ」の説明がていねいである。

１．[C]（キリスト教）守護神（人に付き添って危険などから守ってくれると信じられている天使）
２．[C]（比ゆ的に）（苦しいときの）守り神

以下、オンラインの英語辞書の定義をいくつか。

こうした定義を見ると、人間だけではなく、場所についての「守護神」も指すこと、また、宗教的・超人間的な存在だけではなく、他人を気遣って骨折ってくれる現実の人についても使えることがわかる。

Wikipedia の記述が正しければ、もとの考えはキリスト教よりも古く、古代ギリシア、さらに先日も触れたゾロアスター教までさかのぼるようだ。

This Platonic belief is derived directly (just as is the Platonic doctrine of "ideas") from standard Zoroastrianism. また、今回あらためて辞書を見て知ったのは、大文字で the Guardian Angel とすると、

ということだそうで、ちゃんと組織化された国際ボランティア団体であるようだ。
