「役立たず」 (dead wood, deadbeat)

先日 knock on wood という表現を取り上げたが、wood つながりで deadwood という単語について短く書く。「枯れ木」ということだが、「役に立たない人・物」 (the people or things within an organization that are useless or not needed anymore) も指す、と辞書にある。

- She is quick to get rid of deadwood on her staff.
- He told me that workers would be best off if they worked with supervisors to cut out the "deadwood" employees and increase efficiency.

切れた電池 dead battery はまさに役に立たないが、この dead が出てくる「役立たず」としては、他にも dead loss, dead horse さらに deadbeat, deadhead といった言葉が辞書に載っている。後者２つは「間抜け」というニュアンスが強いようだ。

また deadbeat には「借金を踏み倒す人」という意味もあるのが面白い。

さらに、deadbeat dad という言葉も見つけた。

- （俗）（侮蔑）親としての責任を怠る父親；（特に）離婚・別居後に養育費の支払いを拒む父親

- man not paying child support: a man who, upon divorce, separation, or desertion of his family, avoids or refuses payment of child support (slang insult)

とはいえ、こうした親はいまや父親に限らないということか、Wikipedia を見たら deadbeat parent という項目があり、この中で deadbeat dad や deadbeat mom が出てきた。
