bravado 「虚勢」「空威張り」

スペイン語由来の単語をもうひとつ。bravado は最近読んだ "Rain Fall" に出てきたものではないが、以前読んでここで取り上げた "Gravity" というペーパーバックで見つけた実例が学習ノートにメモしてあった。

- "Get out the Hudson brace drill. I'll do the burr holes myself." He saw the nurse's startled looks, and added, with more bravado than he was feeling, "It's like drilling holes in a wall. I've done it before."

病院に事故で大けがをした患者が運ばれてきて、医師が患者の命を救うため、頭蓋骨に孔をあけるという場面である。Hudson brace はネットでみると実際にあるドリルの名称のようだ。
