status quo ante bellum [ラテン語・外来語]
前回同様ラテン語続きで、再び先日読んだ小説 "Rain Fall" より。status quo という言葉は知っていたが、これに似た status quo ante bellum という表現があった。次のように使われていた。
- If we can just clear up this one matter, we can return to the status quo ante bellum.
私の持っている電子辞書に収録されている辞典のうち、これを載せているのは「リーダーズ英和辞典」だけで、「戦前の状態 (L=state in which before the war)」とある。
複数の辞書が載せていたのは、最後の単語がない status quo ante であった。
