zeitgeist 「時代のムード」

「ツァイトガイスト」のように発音する。ドイツ語に由来するせいか、ごつごつした響きで難しそうな単語にみえるが、時おり目にすることがある。

アメリカの作家ロバート・A・ハインラインのSF小説 The Puppet Masters （邦訳「人形つかい」）の Baen 社版ペーパーバックに収められている評論家の解説は、この zeitgeist が含まれた一文で始まっている。

- The Puppet Masters was supremely timely, supremely in tune with the zeitgeist when it first appeared late in 1951.

また、去年の暮れに出た TIME 誌の "Person of the Year" の特集にも、この単語が出てきた。

英和辞典には、「時代精神」「時代思潮」という訳が載っている。

ドイツ語で Zeit は time、Geist は spirit を意味する（映画「ポルターガイスト」 Poltergeist の「ガイスト」である。なお、ドイツ語は普通名詞も大文字で始める）。

というわけで、確かにこうした訳語で間違いではないのだが、今回の例にもあるように、必ずしも哲学など難しい内容ばかりに使うわけではないようだ。

英英辞典には、

- the general spirit or feeling of a period in history, as shown by people's ideas and beliefs at the time
(Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English)

- the general mood or quality of a particular period of history, as shown by the ideas, beliefs, etc. common at the time
(Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

とある。ある時代を特徴づける気分や雰囲気、空気、世相というようなニュアンスでとらえればいいのではないかと思う。
