「あやとり」 cat's cradle

前回に続いて cradle についてもうひとつ。アメリカの作家カート・ヴォネガットの小説「猫のゆりかご」は、原題を Cat's Cradle という。

訳書の表紙には、あやとりが描かれている。初めてこの作品を読んだ時、この表紙絵とタイトルが気になって辞書を引き、あやとりを英語で何というかを知った。単語や表現は何をきっかけに覚えるかわからないものだ。

「猫のゆりかご」には、この言葉にかけて猫についての話が出てくる。そこでタイトルも「あやとり」ではなく、こちらにしたのだろう。訳文では、あやとりを意味することを、小さいカッコに入れて注の形で示している。

改めて cat's cradle を辞書で引くと、

１．（遊戯）あやとり　play (at) cat's cradel あやとりをする
２．１で作った複雑な形
３．複雑（なもの）(intricacy, complexity)

とある。「あやとり」以外に、比喩的な意味で使われることがあるようだ。

続けて英語の辞書を引いたら、

1. [U] a game you play by winding string around your fingers to make different patterns
2. [singular] a set of lines, threads etc that form a complicated pattern

といった説明や例文があった。

「猫のゆりかご」から、この言葉が出てくる部分をいくつか引用してみよう。

- Anyway, Father looked at that loop of string for a while, and then his fingers started playing with it. His fingers made the string figure called a 'cat's cradle.' I don't know where Father learned how to do that.

- He must have surprised himself when he made a cat's cradle out of the string, and maybe it reminded him of his own childhood.

- 'See? See? See?' he asked. 'Cat's cradle. See the cat's cradle? See where the nice pussycat sleeps? Meow. Meow.'

- A cat's cradle is nothing but a bunch of X's between somebody's hands, and little kids look and look and look at all those X's...

「猫のゆりかご」は傑作とされているが、私にはよくわからなかった。ヴォネガットの小説は何点か読んだが、この作品以外もピンと来たものはなく、どうも私はこの作家と相性が悪いようである。
