getaway 「短い休暇」「息抜きの場所」 [単語・表現]
前回の gentle relaxation から連想したのが getaway である。「逃走、逃亡」ということだが、あわただしい日常からの逃避ということだろうか、「短期間の休暇(のための場所」という意味もある。
オンライン辞書の定義や例文をみると、
- INFORMAL
1 a place away from home where you can relax
We had four days at our mountain getaway. 2 a short vacation
a weekend getaway
(Macmillan Dictionary)
- a place suitable for a vacation; a vacation especially of brief duration
We're planning a weekend getaway to the mountains.
The resort advertises itself as the perfect island getaway.
(Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary)
といった感じだが、さらに見ていくと、
- a place where one escapes for relaxation, vacation, etc., or a period of time for such recreation: a little seaside getaway; a two-week getaway in the Bahamas.
(Dictionary.com)
と、まさに「逃避」のニュアンスを込めた説明もあった。またこの Dictionary.com は Origin として、noun use of verb phrase get away と、句動詞に由来するとしている。
なお発音だが、強勢は第1音節 get- にあり、句動詞に引きずられて -away に置くと誤りになる。強勢の置き場所を弱点とする日本人学習者はかなりいるのではないかと思うが、かくいう私も、頭ではわかっていたとしても会話ではそこまで気が回らず、間違ってばかりのはずである。
ついでだが、「逃走」といえば、以前取り上げた runaway という単語もある。
