nerves of steel (成層圏からのダイビング・その2) [ニュースと英語]
前回、高度3万9000メートルから音速を超えるスカイダイビングを成功させたニュースについて書いたが、さらにネット上の記事をいくつか読んでみた。そこから、目についた英語表現をメモしたい。まず、nerves-of-steel という言い回しをアメリカのテレビABCの記事から。

辞書にはこの形容詞は出ていなかったが、文字通り「鋼鉄のような神経を持つ」、和風に言えば「肝がすわっている」ということだろうと想像がつく。
さらに辞書を調べると、イディオムとして have nerves of steel [have iron nerves] があり、"to be able to remain calm in a difficult or dangerous situation", "not be easily upset or frightened" とわかりやすい説明が載っていた。
ちなみに引用文の冒頭、the nerves-of-steel Baumgartner は、以前にもとりあげた、固有名詞に冠詞がつくケースの実例になっている。
