closed book 「わけのわからないこと」

先日 open book 「明白なこと」という表現を取り上げたが、その逆に closed book とすれば、「理解できない事柄」「見当もつかないこと」という意味になる。また、「決着のついたこと」「解決済みの問題」という意味もある。

辞書にあった例文をいくつか。

- His face is a closed book.

- Abstract art is a closed book as far as I'm concerned.

- His poems are a closed book to me.

- For many people, science is something of a closed book.

- The customs of my youth are a closed book to the younger generation.

「もう終わったことだ」という意味としては、

- Please let's not talk about her former life, that's all a closed book now.

さらに、前回取り上げた open book examination 「参考書持ち込み可の試験」の反対も、closed book exam になる。
