survival of the fittest 「適者生存」 （ハービー・ハンコック「処女航海」） [音楽と英語]
先日取り上げた live and let die や the law of the jungle からさらに連想したのが survival of the fittest である。簡単にいえば「力のあるものだけが生き残る（そうでないものは消え去る）」ということだが、私がこの表現を知ったのは、ハービー・ハンコックの Maiden Voyage というジャズのアルバムだった。
「処女航海」は、海にちなんだ５つの曲から構成され、いわば組曲のような印象を与える。
以前書いたように、私は海が大好きである。その時には、ドビュッシーの交響詩「海」というクラシックの作品を取り上げたが、ジャズで海を描いたアルバムといえば、この「処女航海」が思い浮かぶ。
それはともかく、survival of the fittest について、英語による説明を辞書から引用しよう。
- the idea that the most able or fit will survive (while the less able and less fit will perish). (This is used literally as a principle of the theory of evolution.)
In college, it's the survival of the fittest. You have to keep working in order to survive and graduate.

Herbie Hancock の「処女航海」に戻ると、は、タイトル曲の第１曲 Maiden Voyage や終曲の「ドルフィン・ダンス」 Dolphin Dance のように穏やかな曲がある一方、この「適者生存」のように、ジャズの初心者には多少とっつきにくいのではと思わせる曲があるのは、心を和ませる姿と表裏一体の、自然界の厳しさを表現しているからだろう。
ハービー・ハンコックも、アルバムのライナーノーツに、こんなことを書いている。最初の its は the sea を受けている。
"This music attempts to capture its vastness and majesty, the splendor of a sea-going vessel on its maiden voyage, the graceful beauty of the playful dolphins, the constant struggle for survival of even the tiniest sea creatures, and the awesome destructive power of the hurricane, nemesis of seamen."
追記（2012年12月）：
上記の記事を書いたあと、店頭で見つけた The Economist 誌のカバーストーリーの表紙タイトルが Survival of the biggest だった。今回の表現のもじりであることは間違いなかろう。
