名言 "To err is human." をめぐるトリビア [名言・ことわざ]

前回書いた err on the side of から err つながりで連想したのが、「人は誰でも間違いをする」 "To err is human, to forgive divine." という言葉である。「過つは人の常、許すは神の業(わざ)」などと訳されている。

イギリスの文人アレグザンダー・ポープ Alexander Pope の言葉だと昔教わった。ネットの記事によると、1711年に出版された著作 An Essay on Criticism に出てくるが、正確には当時の書き方で “To err is Humane; to Forgive, Divine.” と、今と綴りが違ったり語頭が大文字だったりしたそうだ。

またこの記事によれば、前半の "To err is human." は古いラテン語のことわざで、ポープの手になるのは後半部分だという。

- Pope didn’t coin the phrase “to err is human.” That’s the traditional English translation of the ancient Latin proverb “Errare humanum est.” However, by adding “to forgive, divine” to this old saying, he created a famous quotation that is still commonly used, adapted and spoofed today.

この言葉は、「間違いをしない人間などいないのだから、他人のミスに神のような寛大な心で接することが必要だ」といった意味あいで使われる。

- All people commit sins and make mistakes. God forgives them, and people are acting in a godlike (divine) way when they forgive. This saying is from “An Essay on Criticism,” by Alexander Pope.
(The American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy)

- "To err is human, to forgive divine" says we should try hard to forgive others because all people are human and make mistakes.
Example: "I am still angry about what my manager did yesterday!" Answer: "It is best to just let it go; to err is human, to forgive divine."

- Prov. You should not be too harsh with someone who makes a mistake, because all human beings make mistakes. (Often used as a roundabout way to ask someone to forgive you for making a mistake.)
Jill: How could you let my dog get out when I told you a hundred times that he should stay in the house!
Ellen: To err is human, to forgive divine.
(McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs)

もうひとつ、"To err is human." を Wikipedia で引いたら、意外なことにこの言葉は載っておらず(代わりに Wikiquote の "An Essay on Criticism" を見よ、と書かれていた)、項目として取り上げられていたのは、1999年に The U.S. Institute of Medicine がまとめた "To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System" という報告書についてだった。

- To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System. The title of this report encapsulates its purpose. Human beings, in all lines of work, make errors. Errors can be prevented by designing systems that make it hard for people to do the wrong thing and easy for people to do the right thing. Cars are designed so that drivers cannot start them while in reverse because that prevents accidents. Work schedules for pilots are designed so they don't fly too many consecutive hours without rest because alertness and performance are compromised.
