instill 「（考えを・人に）徐々に吹き込む・植えつける」

このところ液体にからんだ表現を毎回取り上げているが、今回頭に浮かんだのは instill である。本来の意味から転じて「思想、感情などを注ぎ込む」ことを表す。染め上げる相手を目的語にすることもできる。

辞書を見ると、ラテン語由来の語源から、もとの意味は「液体を一滴ずつ注ぐ、たらす」だが、これには「まれ」と注がついていて、今ではもっぱら「考えを長い期間かけて教えこむ」の方で使うことがわかる。

辞書の説明や用例を引用しよう。最初にあげた「岩波」は、以前紹介したようなこの辞書の特徴に沿ってか、あるいは単に古いためか、「液体」についての意味を最初にあげている。

私が見つけてメモしていた例を２つ。前者は、日本の教育基本法に「愛国心」を盛り込む動きについて伝えた2006年のニュース。後者は、前回も引用したアイザック・アシモフのＳＦ小説「ファウンデーション」にあったもので、the Mule とは、人の心を操る力を持ったというミュータントのこと。

- Japan's Cabinet has approved a bill that will encourage teachers to instill patriotism and respect for tradition in their students.
The bill, which will now be submitted to parliament, would change the country's education law for the first time since its enactment in 1947.
