annotated 「注釈をつけた」（「詳註版・不思議の国のアリス」） [読書と英語]
「不思議の国のアリス」と「鏡の国のアリス」を１冊にした The Annotated Alice がネット書店から届いた。このように "annotated" が題名にあると、詳しい注釈をつけた本であることがわかる。
この The Annotated Alice の場合、amazon.co.jp の「中身を閲覧する」を見ていただければわかるように、巻末ではなく各ページに大きく余白を取って、そこに本文より小さい活字で注が並んでいる。余白が大きい、というより、ページのほぼ半分を注にあてている、といったほうがいいかもしれない。
日本語版「ウィキペディア」は、この本の内容を「不思議の国のアリス」の項で次のように紹介している。文中の「ドジソン」とは、作者ルイス・キャロル Lewis Carroll の本名 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson のことである。
- 1960年、アメリカの著述家マーティン・ガードナーが『注釈・不思議の国のアリス』（The Annotated Alice）と題して、『不思議の国のアリス』と『鏡の国のアリス』を1冊にまとめた本を出版する。同書では、ドジソンによるビクトリア朝の詩のパロディを含めて、両編への広範な注釈がおこなわれている。

私が買ったのは廉価なペーパーバック版だが、パラパラとめくってとりあえず眺めてみた。
以前取り上げたことがある、翻訳家を悩ませる（はずの） antipathies については注がなかった。これは英語のネイティブなら、アリスが antipodes という言葉と間違えたということが誰にとっても明白である、ということなのだろうか。非ネイティブとしてはちょっと残念な点である。
その一方で、登場「人」物の中でも有名な「ドードー鳥」について、
- Carroll's Dodo was intended as a caricature of himself -- his stammer is said to have made him pronounce his name "Dodo-Dodgson." （stammer: どもり、どもる、口ごもる）

という注がある。日本では作者の本名はたいてい（先の「ウィキペディア」もそうであるように）「ドジソン」「ドジスン」と表記されていて、実際 Dodgson という姓はそのように発音する場合が多いらしいが、「アリス」の作者については「ドドスン」のように発音されていたことがこの記述からうかがわれる。
・・・と偉そうに書いたが、この本の注を見て初めてこれに気づいたわけではなく、何かで読んで知っていたというのが本当のところだ。以前紹介した「アリス」の翻訳でも、訳者の河合祥一郎氏が作者の名前の読み方について「ドッドソン（ドジソンではありません）」と「あとがき」の中で書いている。ただ、この The Annotated Alice の注からもそれがわかるので、ちょっと触れた次第である。
ついでだが、「ドードー」は17世紀後半に絶滅した鳥。dead as a (the） dodo というイディオムになっているのをご存知の方もいると思う。「完全に死に絶えた」「忘れ去られた」「時代遅れの」という意味である。
ところで、私が購入したのはペーパーバック版なので、注の活字がたいへん小さいのが残念だ。いまや老眼 presbyopia が入ってきている私にとって、シニア・グラス reading glasses なしにはきつい細かい活字である。
さて、タイトルに annotated がついた英語の本をアマゾンで検索したら、多数ヒットする。それらがみな The Annotated Alice のような体裁を取っているかどうかはわからないが、気に入った作品の annotated edition が出ていたら、手に入れてみてはいかがだろうか。
最後になったが、動詞 annotate についての説明を引用しよう。強勢は最初の音節にある。上の Wikipedia の引用にもあったように、名詞は annotation である。
