鳥だ！飛行機だ！いや、スーパーマンだ！～ Superman のキャッチフレーズをめぐって

前回、The Economist 誌が、「スーパーマン」の有名なキャッチフレーズをもじったタイトルを掲げて安倍首相をカバーストーリーにしたことを取り上げた。そこで今回は、そのフレーズについて知ったトリビアなどを書きたい。

元になっている "It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!" は、1950年代のTVシリーズ Adventures of Superman のオープニングにある。ここには他に、「タマよりも速く、力は機関車よりも強く、高いビルディングもひとっ飛び！」、「（スーパーマンは）正義と真実を守るため、日夜闘い続けているのです」 といった言葉も出てくる。


いずれも英語圏の人なら誰でも知っているのではないかと思うし、日本でもほぼそのまま訳したオープニングで放送されたので、ある年齢以上の人にはよく知られているはずだ（私自身は最初のオンエア時はまだ生まれておらず、子どもの時に再放送で見た）。

オープニングのナレーション全文は、次のようなものだ。

- Faster than a speeding bullet!
More powerful than a locomotive!
Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!

"Look! Up in the sky!"
"It's a bird!"
"It's a plane!"
"It's Superman!"

Yes, it's Superman--strange visitor from another planet, who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men!

Superman--who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way!

この作品に主演したジョージ・リーブス George Reeves は、スーパーマンが「はまり役」となってかえってその後の仕事に苦労し、若くして亡くなったのはそれを苦にした自殺ではないかといわれていることは、typecast という単語を取り上げた時に書いた。

それはともかく、このナレーションの原型はテレビシリーズよりも古く、1940年代のラジオドラマだという。私がトイレタイムの英語学習で時おり読んでいる The Oxford Dictionary of Catchphrases の "faster than a speeding bullet" という項から一部を引用する。「タマよりも速く」ではなく、「飛行機よりも・・・」だったりと、少し違っていた。

- ... So, in February 1940, the first episode of what would become a popular radio serial went on the air complete with the first version of what would soon become the most famous opening signature in history: "Faster than an airplane! More powerful than a locomotive! Impervious to bullets! Up in the sky -- look! It's a giant bird! It's a plane! It's...SUPERMAN!" （後略）（注・impervious:浸透しない、通さない、傷つかない）

またこの項では、

- "How the Internet moves faster than a speeding bullet"

という、テレビドラマ版のオープニングをもじった実例も紹介している。

さらにこの辞書には、"never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way" という項があり、

- Often used to describe corny plots or endings in books, films, etc. The phrase forms the ending to the opening signature to Superman on the US radio serial (1940-51) and the TV series (1953-7)　（後略）

と説明している。

ところで日本語版のオープニングでは、「正義と真実」とは言っているが、"the American way" にあたる部分はない。上記 Youtube の映像からもわかるように、ここでは星条旗がはためいているが、「アメリカ的様式・価値観を守る」というのは、第２次世界大戦、さらに冷戦・共産主義との闘いといった時代背景に長いこと合致していたのだろう。

バットマンの新作 The Dark Knight のシリーズがヒットしたためか、スーパーマンも reboot として Man of Steel という映画が公開されるが（「鋼鉄の男」はスーパーマンのニックネーム）、"the American way" を無邪気に掲げられる時代はとうに過ぎ去った今、そうした側面は新作で何らかの形で扱われているのだろうか。

そんなことを考えながらネットでさらに調べたら、かつてスーパーマンの原作コミックスが、このフレーズをもじった "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" というタイトルのストーリーを2001年に出版していたことを知った。

- The story's title is a play on the well-known Superman phrase "Truth, Justice and the American Way" and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?", a song written by Nick Lowe and popularized by Elvis Costello.

そして、この Wikipedia の項目から外部リンクとして張られていたのが「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙の "Truth, Justice and (Fill in the Blank)" で、これがまさに "the American way" を前面に打ち出すことがそぐわなくなった時代を念頭に置いた内容だった。

この op-ed 記事が書かれた2006年といえば、アメリカがブッシュ大統領（当時）のもとイラク戦争を戦っていたさなかである。詳しくは触れないが、興味がある方は参照していただきたい。
