hocus-pocus 「チチンプイプイ」「ぺてん、作り話」 [単語・表現]
先日書いたように、hokum という単語の元となっているのが hocus-pocus である。響きがおもしろいが、「まじないの言葉、呪文」のほか、「ごまかし、まやかし」「煙にまくような言葉」という意味もあり、うさんくさいというニュアンスが伴うようだ。
数年前、マイカーを運転していたらラジオが新曲を紹介していた。木村カエラの「HOCUS POCUS」だったが、歌のタイトルになるとは、結構知られている単語なのかと驚いたものだった。
それはともかく、先日読んだイアン・フレミングの小説「女王陛下の007」に、次のように使われていた。ジェームズ・ボンドが、イギリス紋章院の系図専門家になりすましてスパイをしているという場面である。
- '...Now this is most interesting.' (Bond knew that it wasn't, that this was all hocus-pocus, but he thought it would do no harm to stretch his heraldic muscles.)

自分の学習ファイルをさらに検索したら、偶然にも、前回も取り上げたアイザック・アシモフの「ファウンデーション」から次のような例をメモしていた。もっとも、メモの主眼は hocus-pocus ではなく、文中の caliber （度量、人徳、器）にあったのだが。

情報ありがとうございました。ヴォネガットについては、以前も書いたことがあるのですが、私にとってはちょっと苦手な作家なのであります。でも機会があれば読んでみたいと思います。Kindle版はどの本もペーパーバックよりずっと安く、最近気になっています。
