hodgepodge 「寄せ集め、ごった煮」 [単語・表現]
前回の mishmash と同様、hodgepodge あるいは hotchpotch も「ごたまぜ」という意味である。数年前にもいくつかの表現を取り上げたビートルズの評伝 The Love You Make から、次のような実例を学習ノートにメモしていた。
- Instead of producing an album that was just a disconnected hodgepodge of hit songs, the albums had a sense of collective identity, a mood and a sound linking them.

ビートルズのアルバムは、はじめは単にヒット曲の寄せ集めだったが、その後はまとまりを意図して制作されるようになった、という意味になる。
もうひとつ、出典は明記していなかったが、こんな実例もノートに書きつけてあった。
- The supposedly known perpetrators of terrorist attacks discussed by the media were an unrelated hodgepodge of apparently containable threats.
脱線だが、ここに出てくる apparently には、「どうやら～らしい」と「明らかに、明白に」という、２つの相反する意味が辞書に載っている。しかし、現実には前者の意味で使われることが多いようだ。「明白に」といいたい場合は、it is apparent that... とした方が誤解がない。
なお、このようなまぎらわしい意味を持つ単語として、以前 arguable と arguably そして deceptively を取り上げたことがあるので、ご存知なかった方は参考にしていただければ幸いである。
さて、hotchpotch は、肉と野菜、じゃがいもを入れたシチューの一種だそうで、ここから「寄せ集め」を意味するようになったのだろう。こちらはイギリス式で、アメリカでは主に hodgepodge を使うという記述が辞書にある。
定義は前回の mishmash と事実上同じなので、例文をオンライン辞書から例文を抜き書きしてみよう。

Middle High German hotzen "shake").

このところ、「ちんぷんかんぷん」あるいは「ごたまぜ」を意味する単語を取り上げてきたが、辞書を見るとまだまだ類義語がたくさんある。
際限がないのでこのへんで打ち止めにするが、その多くは似たような語が重なる reduplication で語呂もよく印象的なので、興味のある方は調べていただければと思う。
