incipit 「書き出しの部分の言葉」

前回、「方丈記」の冒頭の英訳をいくつか紹介したが、「文章の書き始めの語句」を意味する単語がある。incipit がそれで、現代の作品ではなく、もっぱら古い本について使われるようだ。

- 1.（中世の写本や初期刊本の、新章節の初めを示す）書き始め（書き出し）（の語、語句）
2.（音楽）インチピット：中世の典礼聖歌やモテットにおける冒頭の歌詞または音符群；一般に作品目録などに掲げられる楽曲や楽章の冒頭部分

ワープロソフトには、文書の冒頭の数語を自動的にファイルのタイトルにできる設定になっているものがあるが、これについて Wikipedia の incipit の項は、"Modern uses of incipits" という小見出しの説明の中で、

- Many word processors propose the first few words of a document as a default file name, assuming that the incipit may correspond to the intended title of the document.

Wikipedia は、この単語そのものもわかりやすく説明している。決まったタイトルがつけられていない昔の文芸作品を指す際は、いまも incipit が使われているという。

- Incipit is a Latin word meaning "it begins". The incipit of a text, such as a poem, song, or book, is the first few words of its opening line. In music, it can also refer to the opening notes of a musical composition.

- The modern use of standardized titles, combined with the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), have made the incipit obsolete as a tool for organizing information in libraries.

However, incipits are still used to refer to untitled poems, songs, and prayers, such as Gregorian chants, operatic arias, many prayers and hymns, and numerous poems, including those of Emily Dickinson.

実際に使われた文を提供している Wordnik というサイトに載っていた実例も引用しておこう。

- As a result there are two texts with the same incipit.

- From Oxford's Bodleian Library (MS.Don. b. 31), an Agnus Dei with the incipit beautifully encased in the initial Q of "qui."

なお、強勢は最初の母音 i にある。綴りが似ている insipid 「退屈な、おもしろみのない」「（食物が）風味の抜けた、まずい」は形容詞で強勢があるのは第２音節である。
