東京五輪は日本のカンフル剤になるか (a shot in the arm) [ニュースと英語]
2020年のオリンピック開催地決定の瞬間は、私もテレビの中継で見ていた。その後、関連の英文記事をいくつかネットで読んだ。
日本の英文メディアを含めいくつかのサイトに掲載されていたＡＰ通信の東京発のサイド記事は、タイトルにある a shot in the arm を必要とする日本の現状や期待がいろいろな形で説明されている。

この場合の shot は「注射」のことで、比喩的に「刺激となるもの」「元気回復につながるもの」といった意味になる。「カンフル剤」も頭に浮かぶが、私を含めた中高年層の言葉という気もする。いまでも普通に使われているのだろうか。
オリンピックの主催都市と国が経済波及効果に期待を寄せることは当然ではあろうが、福島第一原発の対策を含め、プレゼンで世界に示した約束や理念をしっかり実現してほしいと思う。
a shot in the arm という表現はタイトルだけで記事の本文には出てこない。そこで、せっかくなので東京へのオリンピック招致について使われた他の実例をネットで探してみた。

次に、英語圏の辞書にあった a shot in the arm の説明と例文を引用しよう。酒を指しても使われるようだ。

なお連想した表現として pick-me-up とか one for the road があり、以前取り上げたことがあるので参考までに付記しておきたい。
