wax poetic 「詩心を発揮する」「雄弁に語る」「饒舌になる」 [辞書に載っていない表現]
このところ天の川や芭蕉の俳句の英訳について書いているが、ついでにネットをいろいろ見ていたら、アメリカの火星探査機に一般公募による英語の俳句を収めたＤＶＤが載せられることになった、というちょっと前のニュースを見つけた。
この探査機「メイブン」は、最近のアメリカ政府機関の一部閉鎖騒ぎで、来月打ち上げの予定が一時危ぶまれたが、準備はすでに再開されているそうだ。
まずは、NASA（アメリカ航空宇宙局）のサイトにあった８月の記事から。
- NASA's next mission to Mars will carry a DVD containing over 1,100 entries selected as a result of the University of Colorado at Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics Going to Mars campaign. The contest, which began May 1, 2013, received over 12,500 entries worldwide.

公式サイトのためか、冒頭の主語をNASAにしているが、他メディアの記事は違う形で書いている。

The contest received 12,530 valid entries from May 1st through the contest cutoff date of July 1st. Students learned about Mars, planetary exploration and the MAVEN mission as they composed haiku ranging from the personal to the insightful to the hilarious.

偶然だろうか、どちらにも wax poetic という表現が使われている。この wax は wax and wane （月の満ち欠け；増減；盛衰）という言い回しにもある「増える」「満ちる」の意味だろうが、poetic と組み合わせた言い方は、電子辞書を見たが載っていなかった。
そこでオンライン辞書を引くと、これまたほとんど見当たらなかったが、数少ない記載を引用すると、
- To "wax poetic" means to become increasingly verbose and romantic in speech. To become more and more like a poem. （verbose 口数の多い、多弁な、くどい）
"Not to wax-poetic, but your eyes glimmer like the ocean on a summer evening..."

なお Google の検索ですぐに出てきたのは、この表現が名前になっているアメリカのヒップホップのバンドだったり、２つ目の単語が -s つきの Poetics となっているレコード会社だったりした。
Urban Dictionary は上記の説明に続いて It has nothing to do with vinyl records and bullshit hip-hop, "yo." と記述しているが、これはそのことを指しているのだろう。
wax は以前取り上げた vinyl と同様「レコード」の意味があり、その昔ろうやポリ塩化ビニールが製造に使われたことを反映したものだろう。日本語でも「ヴァイナル」「ヴァイニル」をブログ等で見ることがあるので、こちらを使っている「通」の人もいるらしい。
また yo もおなじみの方にはおなじみだろう。私は高校生の時だったか、映画「ロッキー」 Rocky でこの間投詞を初めて聞き、日本語に似ているなと思ったら意味までそうだったので驚いたものだった。確かにヒップホップで耳にしそうな言葉であるが（私は聴かないのでよくわからない）、こちらはあいさつというより一種のかけ声のはずだ。
もうひとつ、火星探査機の名前 MAVEN は Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN とのことだそうだが、maven は「達人」「くろうと」「目利き」(an expert in a particular subject, a connoisseur) ということである。この意味にもかけてあるのだとしたらおもしろい命名だ。
