larger than life 「ケタはずれの」「人をひきつける」 [アメリカ政治]
悲劇的な暗殺から50年、遺された長女が駐日大使に就任するなど、ジョン・F・ケネディ大統領をめぐるニュースが続いている。ケネディ関連の英文を読んでいると、時おり larger than life という表現を目にすることがあるので、今回はこれを取り上げてみよう。
例えば、
- More than any president since FDR, Kennedy embodied these ideals of American greatness. Kennedy, like the nation he led, seemed larger than life.

大きさに使う life といえば、life size 「実物大」「等身大」という言葉があるが、その life より大きいということだから、
- 誇張された、大げさな、並はずれた、英雄（超人、伝説）的な、人間離れした、非凡（偉大）な、スケールの大きい

- 誇張されて；（人が）生き生きした、元気にあふれた；華麗で人目を引く
(ジーニアス英和大辞典)
「誇張された、大げさな」といった訳語を見ると、ネガティブなニュアンスもあるように感じるが、私が見た範囲では、前向きな意味で使われた例が多いように思う。
次は、自分の学習ノートにメモしていた実例から、まずはメトロポリタン歌劇場の舞台裏を書いたノンフィクションにあったもの。
- From the first day I walked in the stage door, I felt at home in the opera house. Life there was lived on a lavish scale; it was a world populated by larger-than-life characters who behaved as though they lived in an opera. もうひとつ、以前取り上げたことがある、アメリカのテレビ局を舞台にしたアーサー・ヘイリーの小説 The Evening News（邦題「ニュースキャスター」） から。こちらは「実像以上の」「誇張された」「自分を大きく見せる」の意味に取ることもできそうだ。
- Part of the reason something like this happens is that networks have misguidedly let anchor people become larger than life, so the public thinks of them as something extra-special, almost gods.

次の実例はケネディが暗殺されたテキサス州について書いたものだが、モノについての上記の語義 disproportionately important というより、「スケールが大きい」という意味に取るのが自然だ。

テキサスは面積が広大なだけでなく、土地柄や気風も「大きいことはいいことだ」で貫かれた州として知られているが、Texas と larger than life を組み合わせた例もいくつかネットで見つかる。ついでに「誇張された、大げさな」という意味からの連想では Texas tall tale （テキサス流ほら話）という言葉もあるほどだ。
ケネディ大統領が暗殺された時は幼かったので記憶がないが（1968年の弟ロバート・ケネディ上院議員の暗殺はニュースをかすかに覚えている）、大きくなってからは暗殺陰謀説の本を読んだり、テキサス州ダラスの現場に行ってみたりした。こうした個人的な思い出も書いてみたいが、長くなってきたので次回に回すことにしたい。
