triskaidekaphobia 「数字の13を嫌がる」「13恐怖症」 [英語のトリビア]
13日の金曜日は何事もなく過ぎたが、不吉とされる13という数字を怖がることを表す英単語があることを先日知った。以前紹介したアイザック・アシモフの連作ミステリ短篇集「黒後家蜘蛛の会」の一作を再読していたら、その言葉が出てきた。
その名も「十三日金曜日」 Friday the Thirteenth というタイトルの作品だ。その部分を抜き書きしてみよう。前にも書いたように、残念ながら原書は絶版で手に入れることができず、原文はわからない。
- 「いや、ちょっと不思議に思ったものですからね。どうして、十三日金曜日の話が出たのかと」

「マリオが言い出したんだ。彼はトリスカイデカフォーブだから」
「何だって？｝
「十三という数字を病的に恐れる、ということだよ」
「そんなことはないぞ。ただ、用心に越したことはないと思ってるだけさ」

この「･･･フォーブ」は、-phobe 「～恐怖症の人」だろう（その反対の「～の愛好家」は -phile。-phobia とすると「～恐怖症」になる)。
「トリスカイ何とか」をカタカナから想像して電子辞書を引いても見つからなかったが、ネットで調べると Word Spy というサイトに tridecaphobia という記述があり、
- tridecaphobia (try.dek.uh.FOH.bee.uh) n. Fear of the number thirteen.
Notes:
The more commonly accepted word for the fear of a baker's dozen is triskaidekaphobia (1911). However, I like tridecaphobia because it's much simpler to remember (and to spell!).

確かに舌を噛みそうな単語で、短くした tridecaphobia を好むネイティブがいるというのもうなづける。
また、Wikipedia にも Triskaidekaphobia の項があり、「不吉な13」についてのトリビアがいろいろ載っていておもしろい。

ウェブを見ていたら、こうした -phobia 語を集めたサイトもあった。アルファベット順に並んでいるが、一種の造語だから、すごい数だ。

そして、phobia 単体で「恐怖」「嫌悪」の意味がある。辞書には -phobia が独立したものと書かれており、He has not yet overcome his childhood phobia of the dark. とか He has a phobia about being under water. といった例文が載っている。
反対は -phile であることは先に書いたが「～を愛する」ということで、phil- の形で頭に出てくることもある。「フィルハーモニー管弦楽団」の philharmonic は「音楽を好む」、またフィラデルフィア Philadelphia は the City of Brotherly Love という愛称がある。
さらについでだが、先の Word Spy の説明文に出てくる baker's dozen もご存知の方も多いと思うが、「13個」のこと。パン屋が目方不足で罰せられないようにと、初めから１ダースに１個おまけを入れておいたという昔の慣行に基づくという。

日本語で「こじつけ」になっているところが、
原書だと「inventer after the fact」で、
factが単数ってことは、１３の分割が不可能という事実ひとつに
対する腹立ちから、「縁起の悪い数にしてやる！」となったわけで。

など、ロジャーの性格も表現していて、面白い場面だなあと思い、
ここまで引用しました。
魔女（パン屋）の一ダースは、ロシア語通訳の故・米原万里さん
の本のタイトルで聞いたことがありました。
合理的に見える西洋の方々も、縁起担ぎってあるんやなあ、
と面白く感じて読んだのが懐かしい。

何回聞いても心が震えます。真似なんて、とてもとても……です。
日本であれに匹敵する演説って、あるのかなあ。

にゃんきちさん、前回に続いて、原文の紹介、そして深い読みと解説をいただき、ありがとうございました。なるほど、原文もおもしろいですね。ぜひ手に入れてみたいですが、絶版なのが本当に残念です。
米原万里さんの著書はいろいろ読みましたが、どれも「おもしろかった」という記憶だけが残っています。こちらも再読したい著者です。早逝されたのが惜しまれます。
それから以前、戦前の日本の政治家が行った演説を収めたフィルムをテレビで見たことがありますが、みなどっしりとして、見応え聞き応えのある演説ばかり、映像が白黒で音声も悪いことなど気にならないものでした。時代の違いもあるのでしょうが、同じ日本人なのに、今の政治家のちゃかちゃかしたスピーチと比べて何と違いが大きいのだろうと考えたことを覚えています。
