bare bones 「骨子」「必要最小限」 （「007は二度死ぬ」） [読書と英語]
past master という表現について先日書いたが、そこで引用したジェームズ・ボンドものの原作小説「007は二度死ぬ」の文と同じパラグラフに、bare bones というおもしろい表現があったので、これについて書くことにしよう。
ボンドに向かって、暗号に詳しいかどうか上司のMが尋ねる場面である。
- "Well now. You know a bit about cryptography?"
"The bare bones, sir. I've preferred to keep clear of the subject. Better that way in case the Opposition ever got hold of me."
"Well now, the Japanese are past masters at it.（以下略）

このあとに、past master について先日引用した部分が続く。
「敵に捕まった時にしゃべるとまずいので、立ち入らないようにしている」というのが答えだが、第一線での活躍が期待されている007ほどの部下が、暗号についてどれくらい知識があるのか把握していないスパイのボス spy master というのも、考えてみればおかしな話だ。
それはともかく、質問にまず答えたボンドの言葉 bare bones である。「むきだしの骨」とは、日本語で「骨子」にあたるというのが偶然とはいえおもしろい。
007がとっさの答えにもちゃんと定冠詞がつけて答えているように、辞書によっては the がつくという注があったり、見出し語にも含めていたりする。また、一語の扱いで形容詞としても使える。

私が作っている学習ファイルには、他に次のような実例をメモしていた。ひとつは何回か取り上げている、アイザック・アシモフの古典SF「ファウンデーション」シリーズから。登場人物が、すでに崩壊した銀河帝国の帝都があった惑星トランターに行こうという会話をしている場面である。ここには定冠詞はついていなかった。
- "You'll have to go to what's left of the Empire."
"To Trantor?"
"That's right. What was once the Empire is bare bones today, but something must still be at the center."

the をつけたまとまった形というより、これは文字通り「骨ばかり」という感じにとらえたほうがいいのかもしれない。手元にある創元推理文庫の翻訳を見ると、ここは「かつての＜帝国＞は残骸にすぎないが、中心地には何かが残っているはずです」と訳している。
もうひとつは、アメリカの大統領選挙戦について報じた TIME 誌の2008年の記事から、形容詞の実例である。文中の「アリゾナ州選出の上院議員」とは、ジョン・マケイン候補を指す。
- Just two months ago, the Arizona senator was still a distant long-shot, operating a barebones campaign on a bank loan with a dilapidated staff of mostly unpaid advisors.

なお私が使っている電子辞書は、検索すると英語と日本語が串刺しでヒットするが、barebone... と入力していくと、日本語の辞書もひっかかったので読んでみると、自作用の半完成品のパソコンを「ベアボーン」というらしい。あらためてネットを調べると、barebone computer kit あるいは barebone kit という言葉が見つかる。この分野に詳しい人にはおなじみの言葉なのだろう。
