ticker tape parade 「紙吹雪の舞うパレード」 [英語文化のトリビア]
前回 confetti（紙吹雪）を取り上げたので、ついでに ticker tape parade について書いておこう。周囲の建物から紙吹雪が降ってくる大パレードのことを指す。

この ticker とは、「tick するもの、カチカチ（カタカタ）音がするもの」ということから、データを受信して次々と自動的に紙テープに印字する器械を指す。すでに過去の存在といえるだろうが、証券取引やニュースの情報伝達に使われ、「ティッカー」「チッカー」として日本語にもなっている。
ticker tape はそれに使われる細長いテープだが、それを利用したのだろう、パレードなどで雨あられと投げる紙片も指すというわけである。
次は、アメリカ人ピアニスト、ヴァン・クライバーンについての数年前の記事である。彼は事実上無名だった1958年、「チャイコフスキーコンクール」で優勝して一躍時の人になり、ソ連から帰国した時にはニューヨークでパレードが行われた。
ここでは ticker tape parade あるいは (return to) a hero's welcome といった使える表現、また、隠遁状態にあったクライバーンがあるコンサートに姿を見せたことを伝える部分に前回の confetti が出てくる。

911のテロ事件後、ニューヨークでは長いことこうしたパレードが中断していた。下記の記事によれば、「チッカー」が博物館行きとなったデジタル時代とあって、パレードでまかれる紙は新聞紙やオフィスで使われた古紙を裁断したものになっているという。
- Until this week, New York had been chugging along for more than seven years without a ticker-tape parade. The last one was held before the 9/11 attacks.（中略）
Parades with ticker-tape and paper confetti have long been a New York tradition, as the financial district had the combination of tall buildings and thin paper streams of stock information to create a blizzard-like effect. (Today, with the digitization of the exchanges, ticker-tape machines are museum pieces. The “ticker tape” now is mostly just shredded newspaper and office paper.)
