sell short 「自分を安売りする」「他人を見くびる」

前回触れた (have) what it takes について自分の学習メモを見返したら、"Don't sell yourself short. You've got what it takes."という例文が書いてあったので、この sell...short について取り上げよう。

出典などはメモしていなかったのでどこで見つけたのかわからなかったが、あらためて電子辞書を引いたら、「オックスフォード新英英辞典」 Oxford Dictionary of English に載っている例文と同じだった。記憶にないが、これを写したものらしい。

「オックスフォード新英英」の説明はやや簡素なので、他の辞書を引用しよう。「他人をあなどる」のはもちろんのこと、自分自身に使って「安売りする」という意味を伝えたい時にも利用できるのがおもしろい。

ということで、金融用語でもある。少し前に読んだ本に「世紀の空売り」という、秀逸なノンフィクションがあった。原題は The Big Short となっていた。
