henchman 「汚れ仕事をする手下」「取り巻き」 [単語・表現]
前回、「ピンチに直面したヒロイン」を意味する damsel in distress を、007の原作小説にあった文を引用して取り上げた。当然、ボンド・ガールを苦しめる悪者がいるわけだが、ここから連想した単語 henchman を取り上げることにしよう。
辞書を見ると、「信頼できる部下、腹心の部下、右腕」という意味がある一方で、「（政治家・ギャングの）子分、取り巻き」「無節操な支持者」「悪事の仲間、共犯者」と、ネガティブな色合いの強い訳語も並んでいる。
- a trusted follower or supporter who performs unpleasant, wrong, or illegal tasks for a powerful person (such as a politician or criminal)

「ワル」といえば、villain とか bad guy という単語が頭に浮かぶが、この henchman は、ボスに忠実に仕えて下働きをするワル、ということになりそうだ。
Wikipedia は、実在の権力者やエンタメ作品をあげて、このあたりのことをさらにはっきりと書いている。ちょっと長くなるが引用しよう。
- The phrase henchman is also used as a pejorative for any sort of political underling or to present others as such. Thus it was used for associates of President George W. Bush, e.g. by Venezuelan President Hugo Cha'vez. （中略） Members of the SS, or any of Adolf Hitler's staff, are often called "Hitler's Henchmen"（中略）

この手の小説や映画では、ワルの親玉のもとで悪事を働き、じきに始末されるのが「お約束」の存在でもある、ということにもなる（なお上の英文に出てくる expendable や sidekick は以前取り上げたことがある）。
Wikipedia には007の関連で "List of James Bond henchmen" という項目すら作られている。これを見ると、レッド・グラント、オッドジョブ、ジョーズ、といった（知っている人にとってはおなじみの）名前が並んでいる。
脱線だが odd job は「変な仕事」ではなく、「雑用」という意味の普通名詞である。この名前を冠した「ゴールドフィンガー」のキャラクターは、映画では日系のハロルド・サカタが演じていたが、日本語版では「よろず屋」という秀逸なネーミングが使われていた。
なお「アンカーコズミカ英和辞典」は、henchman に「hireling, hanger-on が性差のない語」という注をつけている。-man という語なのでPCの点から紹介したということだろうが、この２語は果たして「ワル」としても henchman と同じ様に使われているのだろうか。
この言葉の由来だが、

などと書かれている。馬とどう関係するのかについては、Wikipedia に、

とある。つまり、もともとは主人の馬の世話係のことだったのが、地位のある人の部下という意味になり、ついには「ワル」の手下を指すまでになってしまったわけである。
ついでに「馬」と -man つながりで、horseman (horsemen) という単語には、辞書に載っていない聖書に由来する表現があり、以前取り上げたことがあるので、参考までに記しておきたい。
