cohort 「仲間」「取り巻き」「共犯者」 [単語・表現]
前回の henchman 「手下」「取り巻き」から連想した単語である。何かのきっかけで a cohort of 「～の一団」として覚えたのだが、後に実例を通して henchman 同様ネガティブな意味でも使われることがあると知った。
とはいえ、手製の学習ノートにメモしていた実例は「ワル」を示すものではなかった。かなり前に取り上げたビートルズについての本 "The Love You Make" で見つけたもので。
- Davis and his cohorts intend to use John Lennon as a drawing card to promote the success of the rock festivals and rallies.

drawing card は「引っぱりだこの人、人気役者・タレント、呼び物」で、ロックフェスティバルを計画している主催者と仲間が、大物のジョン・レノンをイベントに引っ張り出してその人気にあやかろうと画策した、といったような意味だろう。
英和辞典をあらためて引くと、けっこう奥が深そうな単語であることがわかる。強勢は第一音節の二重母音/ou/に置かれる。

「以下略」の部分は長いのでそのままの引用はやめたが、生物の分類で植物は現在の「目」(order)、動物では「亜目」(suborder)にあたる古い単位、という内容が書かれている。
ネガティブな意味としては 5 に「共犯者」と訳語だけがあげられているが、オンラインの Random House Dictionary には例文がついていた。

ということで、この単語は単純な「仲間」を指すだけでなく、ワルの仲間としての「共犯者」、そして、犯罪者ではないが、虫の好かない「取り巻き」連中にも使える、ということになる。また古代ローマの数百人の軍勢を指す言葉だったのが、今では１人を指す場合でも大丈夫のようだ。
ついでだが、年齢層の集団を指す場合には、単純に age group、あるいは少しカッコよく聞こえる age bracket という表現もある。
