legman 「現地情報を集める協力者」「使い走り」、および footman [単語・表現]
先日書いた henchman 「手下」から -man つながりの連想で、legman という単語を取り上げることにする。「（手）足となる人」ということか、情報収集の際に現場で動き回って手助けをする人を指す。
以下はいずれも、スパイ小説の傑作、ジョン・ル・カレの「ティンカー、テイラー、ソルジャー、スパイ」の原書で見つけてメモしていた例である。
- "For this purpose Colonel Viktorov-Polyakov uses legmen and poor Ivlov was for a while one. Nevertheless it was Karla in Moscow who is the real controller of the mole Gerald."

- 'Did Polyakov have a legman?' Smiley asked.
'Why should he? He's a culture vulture. Culture vultures don't need legmen.'

なお２つ目に出てくる culture vulture は「文化人を気取る人」「エセ文化人」と辞書にある。音がそろっている vulture （「ハゲワシ」「コンドル」）を使っているのがおもしろいが、そちらに似合った「芸術にかこつけて金もうけを図る人」「文化ゴロ」という意味も載っている。
本題の legman を辞書で確かめてみよう。

-man という語であるためPCの観点からいろいろな言い換えが書いてあり、legman はあまり使われなくなってきているのではないかと思う。なお上記の district man は「ある地域の取材担当の新聞記者」「担当する持ち場（地域を）をもつ新聞記者」と辞書にある。
ついでに leg からの連想で foot はどうかというと、ちゃんと footman という単語がある。「召使」「従僕」「下男」「馬丁」などと辞書にあり、偶然だが先日取り上げた lady-in-waiting や henchman と似た点があっておもしろい。

この定義にある wait は、lady-in-waiting のエントリで書いたように、「待つ」ではなく「はべる」であろう。
複数形は footmen で、執筆者は当たり前だと思ったのかこれをあげていない辞書もあるが、foot の複数が feet になることを考えれば学習者にはちょっと不親切だと思う。
legman には別の意味もあるが、次回以降に書くことにしたい。
