a man for all seasons 「どんな状況でも頼りになる人」 [辞書に載っていない表現]
前回取り上げた the best of both worlds 「いいとこ取り」と関係はないが、何となく連想した表現が a man for all seasons である。実は、いまだにしっかりしたイメージが持てない言葉でもある。
これも、前回と同じように、映画のタイトルで知った。A Man for All Seasons は1966年のイギリス映画で、邦題は「わが命つきるとも」である。若い頃に何かで観たが、自分の信念に殉じた実在の人物トマス・モアを描いた重厚な歴史劇で、正直、エンターテインメントとして楽しむのには向かない作品だ。

「オールシーズンの男」（？）とはおもしろいタイトルだなと思ったが、その時はなぜかそれ以上詳しく調べようとは思わなかった。
その後海外に出張した時に、その場にいた英語のネイティブ同士が誰かについて "He is a man for all seasons." のように言っているのが聞こえた。そういえば、そんなタイトルの映画があったなと思いだしたが、奥ゆかしい日本人の私は、見知らぬ外国人の会話に割り込んで「それは一体どういう意味ですか？」と尋ねる厚かましさもない。
耳に入る会話の流れから、その人のことを高く買っているらしいことはわかった。「どの季節でもやっていける男」ということで、「どんな状況にも対応できる人」というような感じだろうか、とぼんやり思った。
当時持っていた辞書を引いたが、この表現は載っていなかった。いま「リーダーズ英和辞典」を引いてみると記述があるが、映画の原作である1960年の戯曲について「すべての季節の男」としているだけで、これでは意味がよくわからない（といっても、これは戯曲の邦訳のタイトルがこうなっているからで、「リーダーズ」はそれを紹介しているのにすぎない）。
続いて for all seasons を引くと、「どんな状況にも順応する」とか adaptable to any circumstance とある。私の想像もそれほど違っていなかったようだ。
今回あらためて調べてみると、映画の主人公であるトマス・モアのことを同時代の人がこのように呼んだことを知った。言葉についてのウェブサイト The Phrase Finder に、意味と由来について、次のような説明がある。
- It means "a man for all occasions, whether happy or serious". It's a quotation by Robert Whittington, a contemporary of More, who in 1520 said: "More is a man of an angel's wit and singular learning. I know not his fellow. a man for all occasions と言い換えているから、やはり上記のような意味だろう。これを読み、さらに映画の内容をウェブで確かめて、これで一件落着。、、、と思ったが、しだいにどうも腑に落ちないことがあるのに気づいた。
モアは揺るぎない信念を持ち、カトリックへの信仰を貫いた結果、国王から死罪を言い渡された。つまり「状況に順応しない人」だったことになり、むしろ逆といえるのではないか。
この言葉を別の意味でとらえている説明もあった。

さらに、a man for all seasons という形で載せている辞書はほとんどないものの、数少ない記載を見つけたので読んでみると、

さらに英語圏のサイトで「 a man for all seasons とはどういう意味ですか？」という質問がいくつかあるのも見つけた。しかも回答者によって答えが結構バラバラで、「自信はありませんが」という断り書きがついているものもある。
「多分こうだと思います」という回答を含めて、いくつかを引用してみよう。

これほど異なっていると、まさに表現自体が（ポジティブな意味なら）「どんな状況にも対応できる」感じである。
ならば、この表現が使われた実例を読んでみればイメージが明確になるのではないか。PCに配慮した形でも使われているのではとも思い、man を person にして調べてみた。

一つ目は「いくつもの長所を持つ」、二つ目は「順応性が高い」、三つ目は「ぶれない」という感じで、やはり絞り込める感じではないようだ。
500年前に Robert Whittington が具体的にどういう意味でこの言葉を使ったのかはともかく、最小公倍数としては「確固たる信念を持つとともに、多才で、さまざまな状況に対応することができる、頼りになる人」という感じだろうか。ただ、これでは今回のエントリのタイトルとしては長すぎる。
そこで、苦しまぎれの最大公約数を考えて表題のようにしてみたが、どうもうまくない。いっそのこと「立派な人」くらいにしてしまったほうがいいか。
いずれにせよ、この表現について明確に説明していただける方がいらしたら、お願いできればと思うしだいである。
